At Hand in Hand, our mission has always been to fuel sustainable, grassroots change in Kenya. One program has emerged as our primary catalyst for deep, systemic transformation for young women: Thrive Sports Kenya.
A Sanctuary for Growth
For many of our participants, the field is the place they can truly step into their power. Thrive Sports Kenya serves as a vital community anchor - a physically and emotionally safe space during critical after-school hours. Here, girls find a fierce network of peer support, sisterhood, and shared solidarity that can shield them against social vulnerabilities like early marriage or teenage pregnancy.
True Pathways to Opportunity
We believe that talent is universal, but opportunity is not. Through elite training, regional competitions, and exposure, we open doors to higher education.
Previously, girls faced an abrupt end to their sporting careers after high school. Today, the club offers a sustainable pipeline for women finishing secondary school to have hope, visible role models, and competitive sports while also pursuing higher education or vocational careers.
In rural communities where opportunities are limited, young women now have access to university scholarships, technical training, and secondary school.
How It Started
Established in 2021, Thrive Sports Kenya began as a grassroots initiative focused on keeping football (what Americans call soccer) alive in rural communities. They distributed footballs to local clubs, provided basic training to coaches, and safely transitioned 2-3 girls into secondary school scholarships.
Our partnership began in 2025 and introduced structural support, resource stability, and enhanced training capacity. We’ve shifted the organizational model from basic community support to high-performance and holistic youth development.
In just one year of partnership, we’ve multiplied the number of girls accessing life-changing educational opportunities. The team has also moved to a higher league tier, redefining the lifecycle of these female athletes. Thrive is now a highly competitive team - Zone Champions in the FKF Nyanza Regional League Season 25-26, earning promotion to a higher division!
